Children’s newly erupted permanent teeth aren’t as resistant to decay as adult teeth because kids’ teeth haven’t had as much fluoride exposure. Fluoride is incorporated in the crystal structure of enamel making it stronger than the enamel we are born with. Sealants are clear plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars (back teeth). They protect against cavities by filling up pits and grooves where bacteria thrive. Sealed teeth are far less likely to get cavities than unsealed teeth. This can mean no drilling, and a happier kid!
How Dental Sealants Are Applied
First things first, we start with a squeaky clean tooth. Always using tell, show, do, we show your kiddo the special blue soap and the cake frosting applicator of sealant before we start isolating the teeth to keep them super dry so our “tooth glue” can work. After cleaning the tooth, we apply the blue soap, rinse and dry and then apply tooth glue, light the tooth up with our “magic wand” and then paint on the fluoridated sealant. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. The hardest part of the appointment for kids is keeping their mouth open and for that concern, we offer kids a “tooth chair”.
